What is a Patient Navigator?

A Patient Navigator is not a medical professional, but is a complement to the medical team.  The Patient Navigator assists patients and caregivers as they decipher the overwhelming information provided and tries to eliminate any barriers a patient may have to receiving the best treatment possible.  They also act as advocates, addressing other needs/concerns in a patient’s life that might be impediment to care.

Navigators meet with new patients as they visit the Cancer Center and complete intake assessments in order to access the patient’s strengths and needs and to identify what the patient may need assistance with throughout their treatment process. Navigators continue to provide support and guidance throughout the course of treatment, assisting with issues that inevitably arise.

The Patient Navigator often assists patients with:  insurance and co-pay concerns, applying for charity programs, applying for disability (when needed), referring patients to home health, hospice, and durable medical equipment companies per physicians request, managing oral chemotherapy prescriptions through specialty pharmacies, and helping patients find resources in the community that will enable them to follow their treatment regimen.  Navigators also monitor patient’s distress levels throughout their treatment and make sure their emotional needs are being met.  This may include referring a patient to a support group or for counseling.

The Patient Navigator is supervised by the Cancer Center Director and nurse managers, who can assist with clinical questions as needed.

Patient Navigation is a unique service and an integral part of the UAB Medicine Russell Medical Cancer Center’s personalized approach to patient care.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is an organization made up of volunteers and is guided by a 15 member Board of Directors. Since 1989 Meals on Wheels of Alexander City has provided hot, nourishing meals for persons who are unable to cook for themselves. The meals and the daily contact by caring volunteers allow home-bound persons to remain in their own homes.  The Meals on Wheels office is located at Russell Medical and is staffed by two employees.  All meals are prepared at Russell Medical under a dietician’s supervision. Meals are delivered between 11:15 a.m and 12:30 p.m. To be considered to be served under this program individuals must submit and application for screening. For further questions, eligibility requirements, or to volunteer, please call Linda Boone at 256-329-7382.
